October is national Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Many of us are
all too aware of the situation, because we’re living it. The U.S.
Justice Department’s 2000 National Violence Against Women Survey
reported that "approximately 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are
physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the United States."
In 2003, the department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics reported
that "in recent years, an intimate partner killed approximately 33%
of female murder victims and 4% of male murder victims." To stop
